1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

An S/S South variety struck on a zinc-coated steel planchet, this VarietyVista-documented 1943-S Lincoln Wheat Cent features five simultaneous die cracks at Stage B, documenting widespread structural failure. Die markers UVC-1093 / DMR-008: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die crack across shoulder to lapel at MDS, a die crack from the left wheat lines to rim at MDS, a die crack from the upper right wheat grains to rim, a light die crack northwest from the upper right N of ONE to between IB of PLURIBUS, and a light die crack from O of ONE to rim between PL of PLURIBUS. Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The five concurrent cracks spanning both faces document a die pair experiencing systematic failure at mid-life. Weighing 2.70 grams at 19.05 mm, the steel cent's magnetic properties and zinc coating make this wartime San Francisco issue immediately distinguishable from standard copper compositions.
