Description

Struck on a zinc-coated steel planchet — the only year U.S. cents were produced in this magnetic composition — this VarietyVista-documented 1943-S Lincoln Wheat Cent tracks extensive reverse die cracking across multiple stages. Die markers UVC-155 / DMR-003: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with obverse at MDS, a die crack from O of ONE to rim through L of PLURIBUS at MDS, and a die crack from the last S of STATES to rim; Stage C with a light die crack on the coat at MDS and a die crack south from F of OF to rim through the left stem at MDS; Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The multiple rim-reaching die cracks across PLURIBUS, STATES, and the stem document widespread reverse structural failure at mid-life. Weighing 2.70 grams at 19.05 mm, this San Francisco Mint steel cent's distinct composition makes it instantly recognizable.
