1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-017

Description

An S/S West variety from the San Francisco Mint, this 1943-S wartime silver Jefferson Nickel was documented by VarietyVista as RPM-017. Die markers UVC-540 / DMR-037: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die crack from dome south between pillar #2 and #3 at MDS and a die crack across upper hair at LDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The dome-to-pillar die crack at Stage B and the hair die crack document concurrent structural deterioration on both reverse and obverse faces. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1943-S carries the oversized S above Monticello following the wartime convention. The westward S displacement indicates the initial punch was placed slightly east of the intended position, with the corrective second punch establishing the final location.
