1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-013

Description

Struck at San Francisco in the wartime silver alloy during 1943, this RPM-013 Jefferson Nickel was documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-147 / DMR-014 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS with a die crack from the lower left building to the rim, while the obverse remains at MDS. The asymmetric die states at Stage C, where the reverse reached LDS while the obverse stayed at MDS, indicate the reverse deteriorated faster during this production run. At 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized S above Monticello's dome distinguished the silver-content issues. The die crack traces Monticello's architectural wall outward to the rim, following a natural stress line in Schlag's design.
