1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-011

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1943-S wartime silver Jefferson Nickel from the San Francisco Mint exhibits concurrent die deterioration on both faces at the MDS stage. Die markers UVC-145 / DMR-012 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS with several N-S die scratches on the upper reverse, a die crack running south from the right dome between pillar #3 and #4, and a die crack running N-S in Jefferson's hair; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The simultaneous dome-to-pillar reverse crack and hair crack on the obverse at Stage B document parallel structural failures on both die faces at mid-life. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1943-S features the oversized S above Monticello, part of the large-mintmark convention established across all three mint facilities for wartime silver nickel production.
