1943-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Displaying an S/S West repunching on a 1943 San Francisco Mint Jefferson Nickel struck in the wartime silver alloy, RPM-010 is tracked by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-144 and DMR-011 across three die states. In early die state, the reverse is in its earliest condition while the obverse already shows developing signs: a light die crack runs east-west through the upper hair at early-mid state, and another crack crosses the lower bust. By mid-die state, a die crack extends south from the right dome of Monticello between pillars three and four, and the obverse reaches late-mid condition. Late die state is unconfirmed. The large S mintmark placed above Monticello on wartime silver nickels makes repunching details more visible than the small mintmarks used on pre-war issues. The 1943 wartime nickel was struck on planchets of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, a composition adopted to free nickel for military applications. The westward displacement of the secondary S impression shows the punch was repositioned before the final impression.
