Description
Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel carries an S mintmark repunched at a different position above Monticello's dome. Die markers UVC-137 / DMR-004: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS with a die crack across the upper right roof, a die crack along the lower far right baseline, and two light die cracks in the upper hair. The four distinct die cracks at LDS — spanning Monticello's roof, baseline, and Jefferson's hair — document extensive structural fatigue across multiple design areas. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1943-S features the oversized S mandated to distinguish the emergency wartime composition from standard copper-nickel issues.
