1943 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010
Error
Description
Struck in the wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese — adopted to conserve nickel for military use during World War II — this 1943 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel preserves light hub doubling on UNUM and OF AMERICA on the reverse. The large P mint mark above Monticello's dome distinguishes wartime nickels from their pre-war and post-war counterparts. Assigned UVC-1697 and DMR-096 within the VarietyVista framework, DDR-010 is cataloged among the more extensively documented wartime varieties. Two die stages are recorded: Stage A at Early Die State on both faces, and Stage B at Early-Mid Die State (EMDS), indicating examination at a transitional point between early and mid-stage wear. Light doubling on UNUM and OF AMERICA concentrates the spread in the upper reverse legend above Monticello. Philadelphia struck over 271 million wartime nickels in 1943, providing a large population from which variety collectors can source examples. Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-010.
