1943 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 1943 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007 on the Jefferson Nickel shows very light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with doubling intensity increasing from left to right across the inscription. The 1943 Jefferson Nickel is one of the wartime "silver" nickels struck in the emergency 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese alloy adopted from mid-1942 through 1945 to conserve nickel for military ordnance. These wartime nickels are identifiable by their large mintmark placed above Monticello's dome. Die markers are UVC-094 and DMR-041, with three documented stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B showing a die gouge on the left side of the first A of AMERICA at MDS with a note that the reverse is also listed as RPM-040 pairing, and Stage C with a heavy die crack from the rim between RI of PLURIBUS running south through the left dome and between pillars 1 and 2 to the V of FIVE at LDS. The late die state crack progression makes advanced-stage examples particularly dramatic but more difficult to locate in high grade.
