1943 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as FS-101 in the Cherry Pickers' Guide, this 1943 Jefferson Nickel DDR-002 was struck in the wartime silver alloy (56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese) that replaced the standard copper-nickel composition from mid-1942 through 1945. Light spread appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM, MONTICELLO, FIVE CENTS, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This is also a dual variety, with the obverse identified as DDO-003. Die markers include UVC-712 and die marriage DMR-066. Stage B documents the reverse in Mid-Die State with the obverse DDO-003 also in MDS. Stage C shows both reverse and obverse in Late Die State. Stage A in Early Die State remains unconfirmed. Attributed by VarietyVista. The wartime silver alloy's different metallurgical properties compared to standard nickel affected how dies wore during striking, potentially influencing die state progression. The dual-variety status, combining a DDR with a DDO from the same die marriage, makes specimens particularly valuable to collectors seeking coins that display hub doubling on both sides.
