1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Cataloged as UVC-124, DMR-005, this 1942 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent features a triple-punched mintmark with the S/S/S positioned to the North, showing clear serif separation between all three impressions. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in Early Die State, Stage B in Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). Triple-punched mintmarks are considerably scarcer than standard double repunches, as they required the die sinker to misposition the punch not once but twice before achieving the final corrected placement. Struck in 95% copper at San Francisco during 1942, this cent was among the last copper-composition Lincoln cents before the Mint switched to zinc-coated steel in 1943 to conserve copper for World War II ammunition. The S/S/S North orientation means both earlier punches fell south of the final position, creating a stacked progression of serif details visible under moderate magnification. RPM-003 rewards patient cherrypickers, as the triple repunch is most easily detected by examining the serifs at the top and bottom of the S mintmark for three distinct layered impressions.
