1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Notable for documenting a reverse die change mid-production, this VarietyVista-recorded 1942-S Lincoln Wheat Cent tracks how a single obverse die could be paired with different reverses during service. Die markers span two pairings: UVC-122 / DMR-003 covers Stage A with obverse at EDS, a die crack from the upper left wheat to rim at MDS, and a die chip outside the left wheat at the tip of the crack. Stage B shows obverse at EMDS and a die chip in upper right wheat lines at LMDS. Then UVC-123 / DMR-004 covers Stage C with obverse at MDS and the reverse die changed to EDS. Stage D is LDS (unconfirmed). The reverse condition jumping from LMDS back to fresh EDS proves a mid-service die replacement. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm during the last year before the wartime steel cent composition.
