1942-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-015

Description

The 1942-S WRPM-015 is a repunched mintmark variety on the San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, where the S mintmark was punched into the reverse die more than once with impressions slightly offset. Several diagnostic die markers aid attribution. On the obverse, a die crack runs across the bust above the designer's initials, with a second crack extending above and to the right from the back of the bust to the lapel area. These cracks indicate the die was in a mid-to-late state when coins with the most visible crack progression were struck. On the reverse, a small die chip sits just above the right wheat grains of the right wheat ear, and a die crack passes through the lower right wheat grains on the same ear. The concentration of cracks and chips across both sides suggests this die pair saw extended use during 1942-S production, and the progressive nature of die cracks means examples can be sequenced into relative die states based on crack length and severity. The 1942-S Lincoln Cent was produced in significant quantities during the wartime economy, providing variety collectors a reasonable population to search.
