Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint 1942-S Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-005 tracks four stages with a progressive V.D.B. die crack providing the primary attribution marker. Die markers UVC-126 / DMR-007: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with die crack over V.D.B. at EMDS, die scratch south from 9 of date, and die crack in lower right wheat grains at EMDS; Stage C with the V.D.B. crack strengthened at LMDS, weak obverse die scratch, and die crack in right wheat grains extending into the field at LMDS; Stage D with a light die crack across lower lapel at LDS, die chip on die crack outside lower right wheat grains, and die chip in upper left wheat grains and lines at LDS. The V.D.B. crack growing from initial appearance through strengthening documents a fracture propagating across Brenner's designer initials. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, struck during the first full year of wartime cent production.
