Description
From the debut year of the wartime silver program at San Francisco, this Jefferson Nickel was documented by VarietyVista. Die markers UVC-1870 / DMR-023: Stage A EDS with a die scratch north-south through the mintmark, plus a die clash through the knot at LDS; Stage B MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C LDS (unconfirmed). The die clash through the knot is an intriguing feature where design elements from Jefferson's hair ribbon transferred to the reverse during an unprotected die contact event. The die scratch through the mintmark at EDS provides an early-state identification marker independent of the repunching. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1942-S introduced the oversized S above Monticello's dome alongside the P and D variants. No directional displacement is specified in the comments for this particular variety.
