1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-015

Description

An S/S West variety from the San Francisco Mint, this VarietyVista-documented 1942-S wartime silver Jefferson Nickel features an extensive crack network spanning both Monticello's architectural elements and the obverse portrait. Die markers UVC-512 / DMR-016 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with light die crack from E of MONTICELLO through E of CENTS to rim at K-6 at MDS, light die crack from right dome south through pillar #3 to C of MONTICELLO, and die crack northwest through hair at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). Specimens are needed for new digital color photographs. The crack network connecting dome, pillar, and inscription elements documents widespread structural fatigue. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized S above Monticello identifies the wartime silver composition.
