Description
Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel bears the 11th cataloged repunched S mintmark for the 1942-S date. Die markers UVC-053 / DMR-012 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a light die crack from bottom left triangle southeast to bottom of pillar #2 at EMDS, a strong die clash in queue at LMDS, and numerous die scratches north-south on obverse; Stage C with numerous fine die scratches north-south on reverse at EMDS and new die scratches north-south on obverse at EMDS; Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The strong die clash in the queue area at Stage B documents a striking press malfunction where obverse and reverse dies contacted without a planchet. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm.
