1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Struck during the wartime silver alloy period when Jefferson nickels carried a large mintmark above Monticello, this 1942-S variety shows an S/S repunching displaced to the south. Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-010 with die marker references UVC-052 and DMR-011, the die also shares its obverse with DDO-002, making specimens from this pairing multi-variety coins combining a repunched mintmark with a doubled die obverse. Three die stages have been identified. Stage A presents the reverse in early die state while the obverse displays DDO-002 characteristics at mid die state, with a die crack running across the bust and another through the upper hair. Stage B remains at mid die state though unconfirmed, and Stage C at late die state is likewise unconfirmed. The overlap with DDO-002 gives collectors two attributable features from a single coin, elevating both the numismatic interest and the diagnostic complexity of this wartime issue.
