1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel was struck in the first year of the emergency 35% silver composition mandated by Congress to conserve nickel for military armor plating. Die markers UVC-047 / DMR-006 track three stages: Stage A with reverse and obverse at EDS; Stage B with extensive cracking including a die crack south from rim through I of PLURIBUS to steps between pillar #1 and #2 at LDS, a die crack south from steps between pillar #3 and #4 to rim through N of CENTS and O of OF, heavy die gouges north-south through all pillars, a die crack east-west across upper hair, and two die cracks across lower bust at LDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The network of cracks spanning both Monticello pillars and Jefferson's portrait documents severe structural failure across both dies. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams.
