1942-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

From the first year of the wartime silver alloy composition, this VarietyVista-documented 1942-S Jefferson Nickel RPM-002 was struck at the San Francisco Mint with its oversized S above Monticello's dome. Die markers UVC-044 / DMR-003 track three stages: Stage A with numerous die scratches on reverse at EDS and a die crack Northwest through upper hair at LMDS; Stage B with a die crack from the right dome south between pillar #3 and #4 to N of CENTS at MDS and obverse at LDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The early-appearing die crack through upper hair at Stage A is unusual, as structural cracking typically emerges at later die states. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, this emergency alloy was mandated by Congress to conserve nickel for military armor plating.
