1942 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-0244 and DMR-021, this 1942 Washington Silver Quarter DDR-008 exhibits medium spread on TES of STATES and OF AMERICA — a partial-inscription doubling pattern where the hub displacement vector produced visible secondary impressions only on certain letter groups within the longer reverse inscriptions, leaving adjacent letters without discernible doubling. Three die stages trace the working die's service life: Stage A at early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B showing both reverse and obverse at mid-die-state (MDS); and Stage C at late die state where structural deterioration manifests as a die crack running down the eagle's right wing, a light die crack across the bust, and a light die crack across the upper hair. The progressive die crack development in Stage C provides secondary attribution markers and documents the die's terminal deterioration phase. The Washington Silver Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1942, during the early years of World War II when the nation's economy was transitioning to wartime production. Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, each coin weighs 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. John Flanagan designed the obverse portrait of George Washington based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's famous bust, and the heraldic eagle reverse featuring laurel and olive branches served from 1932 through 1998. The selective doubling on TES and OF AMERICA rather than the complete inscriptions demonstrates how hub displacement affects different letter positions based on their angular relationship to the displacement vector and their distance from the pivot point.
