1942 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007
ErrorDescription
Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on the 1942 Jefferson Nickel reverse creates close doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM with slight spread also visible on AMERICA. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, who documented detailed die markers for both sides: obverse shows a die scratch on Jefferson's nose and a die scratch below BE of LIBERTY; the reverse carries a die gouge through STATES OF AMERICA and a die scratch above RIB of PLURIBUS. This die pair is also known for an obverse Repunched Mint Mark cataloged as WRPM-027/RPM#13, showing a P/P West displacement. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1942 WDDR-007. The RPM combination makes this die pair particularly noteworthy — finding both a doubled die reverse and a repunched mint mark on the same coin provides dual variety status. Philadelphia's 1942 nickel production of approximately 49 million pre-war composition pieces (before the transition to the silver "war nickel" alloy in mid-1942) represents the final months of the standard copper-nickel five-cent composition for the duration of the conflict.
