1942 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Covering virtually the entire reverse text field, DDR-007 of the 1942 Jefferson Nickel shows strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the MONTICELLO inscription — a comprehensive doubling that affects four separate design areas simultaneously. Crucially, this is a cupro-nickel composition specimen from the standard 75% copper / 25% nickel alloy, distinguishing it from the 35% silver wartime alloy that Philadelphia also began producing in late 1942. The composition distinction matters for attribution because different planchet alloys were struck with different die pairs, and die varieties must be cataloged under the correct composition. Strong extra thickness — the highest intensity designation — indicates that the doubling is readily visible without extreme magnification, making this one of the more dramatic DDR varieties for the 1942 date. Die markers UVC-1761 and DMR-050 are assigned; the high DMR sequence number of 050 reflects the extensive cataloging effort applied to early Jefferson Nickel die varieties. Seven documented doubled die reverses for the 1942 Philadelphia cupro-nickel issue represents a substantial census, and DDR-007 ranks among the more visually impressive entries. Philadelphia's wartime production capacity was immense, and the multiple hub impressions required to create working dies during this high-demand period generated numerous doubling anomalies across the Jefferson Nickel series.
