Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-0262 and DMR-013, this 1942-D Washington Silver Quarter DDR-002 exhibits medium spread southward on the lower wreath, arrows, talons, and the eagle's beak — a downward-directed doubling pattern affecting the lower design elements of the heraldic eagle reverse. Three die stages are documented: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in early die state (EDS); Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS) showing a light die crack running down the eagle's right wing and two die cracks across the upper hair on the obverse; and Stage C at late die state (LDS), unconfirmed. The Stage B die deterioration reveals concurrent failure on both dies — the wing crack on the reverse and hair cracks on the obverse developing simultaneously as both dies accumulated striking stress during production. The southward spread direction concentrates the most visible doubling on the eagle's lower features (talons, lower wreath, arrows) where the downward hub displacement produced the greatest separation between primary and secondary impressions. The Washington Silver Quarter was designed by John Flanagan and struck at the Denver Mint in 1942 in 90% silver composition weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter. The 1942-D was produced in the months before America's full mobilization for World War II, and the 90% silver composition would continue through 1964 before the Coinage Act of 1965 transitioned the denomination to clad. The medium southward spread on the wreath, arrows, and talons makes these lower reverse elements the primary diagnostic zones, with examination under 7x to 10x magnification revealing the doubled edges and displaced secondary images on these features.
