1942-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
Error
Description
WDDR-008 on the 1942-D Lincoln Wheat Cent carries cross-references CONECA 4-R-VIII and Coppercoins 1942D-1DR-004 (Wexler Variety ID: 1942-D 1¢ WDDR-008). The doubling is Class IV mechanical — a pivot-and-spread action — showing on the upper O in ONE with spread directed to the west. Class IV doubling on Wheat Cents arises from the working die shifting during hubbing, producing a partial offset second impression. Die markers are present on both obverse and reverse. The 1942-D Wheat Cent is a bronze Denver Mint issue, struck the year before the wartime steel cent. Confirm the western spread on the upper O in ONE as the primary attribution step, then verify against die markers to distinguish WDDR-008 from other 1942-D DDR varieties. CONECA class 4-R-VIII provides precise mechanical classification for specialist documentation. Die Markers: Obverse: A long die scratch runs NNE from the top of the I in LIBERTY. Die gouges can be found to the left of the eyebrow and the central back of the forehead. Reverse: A short die scratch runs SW from the bottom left of the E in EPU. A short die scratch runs from SW to NE through the bottom left of the N in UNITED. Long parallel die scratches run from NNW to SSE through the O of ONE to the top of the E in CENT. A short die scratch runs NNW from the top of the D in UNITED.
