1942-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

From the final year of standard-composition Jefferson Nickels before the wartime silver alloy, this 1942-D RPM-003 documents a repunched mintmark struck in regular 75% copper and 25% nickel — not the 56% Cu, 35% Ag, 9% Mn wartime composition that began partway through 1942. Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-568 and DMR-004, the variety was produced at Denver during a transitional year. Die progression spans four states: obverse EDS, reverse EDS, MDS, and LDS. The separate early die state notation reflects independent deterioration tracking for each side. As RPM-003, this is distinct from any RPMs on the wartime silver 1942-D with the large D above Monticello. The composition distinction matters because the regular 1942-D carries the small D in its traditional location, while the wartime version bears a large D above the dome — making these effectively different sub-types.
