1942-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Cataloged under UVC-042 and DMR-003, the 1942-D Jefferson Nickel RPM-002 shows a D/D Southeast repunched mintmark — the secondary D punch displaced to the southeast of the corrected final position. The 1942-D was struck in the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel alloy; the wartime silver composition began mid-1942 with the Philadelphia Mint only, so the 1942-D remained cupronickel throughout its production. Three die stages are documented. Stage A shows the reverse in early die state with the obverse in mid-die state — indicating the obverse wore faster. Stage B shows the reverse in mid-die state with the obverse in late die state. Stage C is late die state, unconfirmed. The asymmetric die wear documented for this pairing — obverse aging ahead of the reverse across Stages A and B — is a notable characteristic. The Southeast directional shift is the primary mintmark attribution feature for RPM-002 within the VarietyVista 1942-D Jefferson Nickel catalog. Felix Schlag's design places Thomas Jefferson's portrait on the obverse and Monticello on the reverse.
