1941-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003

Description

Cataloged as UVC-1513 and DMR-021, the 1941-S Lincoln Wheat Cent DDR-003 shows strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, wheat ears, stems, and OF AMERICA, with separation lines visible on the affected elements. Four die stages (A through D) are documented. Stage A obverse carries MMS-002, the small mintmark style, while the reverse is early die state — the small mintmark style is a useful initial diagnostic. Stage B obverse is mid die state, and the reverse is mid die state. Stage C shows a die crack from the lower right wheat to the rim, along with die cracks from the upper left wheat, from the E of ONE to the U of PLURIBUS, and on the lapel. Stage D is late die state. The four-stage progression makes this one of the more thoroughly documented 1941-S Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die reverse varieties. Struck in bronze, DDR-003 is cataloged in the VarietyVista reference for the 1941-S date.
