Error
Description
An inverted small S mintmark on this 1941 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel preserves evidence of human error during the hand-punch era. Before 1990, engravers physically punched each mintmark into working dies, and this S was inserted upside down. Schlag's design was only in its fourth year of production by 1941. Documented as "Normal Small S Inverted Small S," distinguishing the punch style from large S mintmarks. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1941-S 5¢ WIMM-001, no other cross-references known. Tangible proof of mid-century handcraft in U.S. coinage.
