1941-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Bearing the first sequence number in the RPM catalog for the 1941-D Washington Quarter, this variety was struck during a period when mint marks were individually punched by hand into each working die, making repunched impressions a natural consequence of the process. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-0200 and DMR-016, three die stages document the variety's progression. Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die-state shows a die crack from BUS to the eagle's left wing and a small die chip on the bust east of the 4 in the date. Stage C advances to late die state with the reverse at LDS, a die crack across the hair into the forehead, and a small die chip on the bust west of the 4 in the date. The 1941-D Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint during the final year before wartime demands began affecting U.S. coinage production.
