1941-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Combining two distinct doubling manifestations on a single variety, DDR-001 on the 1941-D Jefferson Nickel exhibits both light spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and OF AMERICA. Die markers UVC-669 and DMR-006 confirm this working die. The coexistence of spread and extra thickness indicates a transitional hub displacement: the secondary impression was offset just enough to begin producing separated secondary images (spread) on certain letter strokes while remaining nearly coincident on others, where it merely broadened the design (extra thickness). This dual manifestation often appears differently on individual letters depending on their orientation relative to the displacement vector — vertical strokes may show distinct spread while curved or horizontal elements exhibit thickening. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse places E PLURIBUS UNUM and OF AMERICA in arcs above the building, and the dual-manifestation doubling across both inscriptions provides multiple diagnostic checkpoints. As DDR-001, this variety holds the primary catalog position for 1941 Denver Mint doubled die reverses, marking it as the most significant documented reverse hub doubling for this date-mint. The 1941-D was struck in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel), only the fourth year of Jefferson Nickel production. Pre-wartime Denver Mint varieties from 1938-1941 are especially prized by Jefferson series specialists.
