1940-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Washington Quarters produced before 1965 carry a 90% silver composition, and the 1940-S is among the World War II-era issues struck at San Francisco on that alloy. The 1940-S DDR-002 is cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-0149 and DMR-007. The doubling is medium in spread and distributed across QUARTER, the left stem of the eagle's olive branch, the bow, and the surrounding wreath — four zones providing multiple reference points for detecting the secondary hub impression. Stages A (EDS) and B (MDS) are currently unconfirmed. Stage C (LDS) is the best-confirmed state, marked by a die crack down the eagle's right wing, a crack from BUS of PLURIBUS to the wing, a crack across the bust, and a crack across the forehead into the upper hair. The Stage C crack network provides a clear die-state identification path for late specimens. The wartime context of this 90% silver San Francisco issue makes DDR-002 a variety of interest to both series specialists and doubled-die collectors.
