Description

Ninth documented repunched mintmark for the 1940 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-009 preserves a secondary S mint mark impression where the punch was applied to the working die in a slightly different position before the final placement. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1940S-1MM-009 in the copper cent specialist catalog, this variety benefits from dual attribution across reference systems. Victor David Brenner's bronze obverse (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) carried the mint mark on the obverse below the date during this era, where hand-punched placement made repunched mintmarks a recurring phenomenon. Die Markers: Obverse: Light die crack NW from the upper left of B in LIBERTY; die crack curving south from the lower left of E in LIBERTY. Reverse: Die crack from the rim at 9:15 running NE into the wheat grains of the left wheat ear. The network of die cracks on both sides — spanning LIBERTY on the obverse and the wheat ear on the reverse — indicates advanced die deterioration and provides strong secondary attribution alongside the primary repunched mintmark feature.
