Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1940-S 1¢ WRPM-005) and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #2 and Coppercoins 1940S-1MM-002, this San Francisco Wheat Cent carries triple catalog coverage. Obverse Stage A: SSE die scratches from 4 in date along right side of mintmark, N/S die scratch between upper left of mintmark and lower 9, lathe marks above IN GOD and under bust extending beyond bust on left side. Stage B: die scratches abraded away, lathe marks weaker. Reverse Stage A: NW/SE die scratches inside M in UNUM on lower right. Stage B: scratch still present, die crack from rim at 10:30 SE to wheat tip, die crack from rim at 4:15 NNW to wheat ear. Struck during the Depression era when San Francisco supplemented Philadelphia and Denver output, the 1940-S is a readily available date, but its repunched mintmark varieties reward careful examination under magnification.
