1940-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-008

Description

Cataloged as UVC-1053, DMR-010, this 1940 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark with the S/S positioned to the Northwest. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B shows obverse and reverse in MDS, and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). The S/S Northwest repunch direction indicates the first S punch landed slightly southeast of its intended position before the corrected application. Struck in 95% copper at the San Francisco Mint, the 1940-S Wheat Cent was produced as the nation's economy rebounded in the years leading up to World War II. San Francisco mintages for Lincoln Cents during 1940 were moderate compared to Philadelphia and Denver output. Repunched mintmarks on S-mint Wheat Cents are collected alongside their D-mint counterparts, with the curved letterform of the S sometimes making repunch directions more challenging to determine than the angular D.
