1940-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

A west-direction S/S repunched mintmark on the 1940-S Lincoln Wheat Cent, combined with a dramatic rim-to-rim die crack through the right wheat stalk, defines RPM-006, catalogued UVC-088 and DMR-007 across three die stages. Stage A is particularly notable: the obverse is early die state while the reverse simultaneously shows a rim-to-rim die crack through the right wheat — a very late die state reverse marker meaning the crack spans the full diameter of the die, a structurally significant failure. Stage B is the mid die state (unconfirmed). Stage C is the late die state (unconfirmed). The rim-to-rim crack in Stage A is among the most dramatic single die markers in the 1940-S RPM documentation, indicating the reverse die had sustained severe stress by the time of Stage A production. The 1940-S Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck in bronze — 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc — at the San Francisco Mint under Victor David Brenner's design. Stage A specimens showing the full rim-to-rim crack carry exceptional die-failure appeal in addition to the RPM attribution.
