1940-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-086 and DMR-005, this 1940 San Francisco Lincoln wheat cent carries RPM-004, a repunched mintmark variety. Three die stages document the die pair's progression. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at early-to-mid die state is notable for concentric circle lathe marks on the obverse, an unusual artifact indicating the die surface was turned on a lathe during preparation. As the die progressed, a die crack developed from the lower right wheat ear to the rim, another from the E of ONE to the S of PLURIBUS, and a third from the lower left wheat to the rim, placing these specimens in late die state. Stage C remains unconfirmed as a separate classification. The concentric lathe marks in Stage B are a particularly distinctive diagnostic, representing die preparation evidence rather than typical deterioration markers. San Francisco wheat cents from 1940 saw moderate production, and the combination of the repunched mintmark with the lathe marks makes this die pair doubly interesting to error and variety specialists.
