1940-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1940-D 10-cent WDDR-007, this Mercury Dime exhibits a Class II spread towards the center visible on UNITED STATES OF, the leaves above the mintmark, the top of the axe and fasces, and the leaves below OF — a centripetal displacement pattern where the secondary hub impression shifted inward toward the die's center, compressing the design elements slightly. Notably, the reverse die paired with this doubled die carries an additional variety: a repunched mintmark listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1940-D 10-cent WRPM-009, a D/D North — making this a DDR/RPM combination die where both hub doubling and mintmark repunching coexist on the same reverse, doubling the variety's significance for collectors who pursue both categories. Obverse die markers include SW/NE die scratches to the left of the nose and chin, and parallel die scratches running SW to NE through the 19 in the date. Reverse markers include a short die scratch running NNE from the lower right side of the fasces. The Mercury Dime — formally the Winged Liberty Head Dime — was designed by Adolph A. Weinman and struck at the Denver Mint in 1940, composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.91 mm. The fasces reverse design, with its bundle of rods and protruding axe head, provided distinct diagnostic areas for detecting hub doubling, particularly on the leaf clusters that surround the central fasces shaft. The dual DDR/RPM classification on a single reverse die creates a specimen that bridges two collecting specialties simultaneously.
