Description

Sixth in the Wexler Team's catalog of 1940-D Mercury Dime doubled die reverses, WDDR-006 is accompanied by a significant obverse counterpart: the obverse die is identified as WDDO-011, carrying a close Class II spread on the date. This dual attribution means the same die pair exhibits hub doubling on both sides — a Class II spread on the obverse date and the DDR on the reverse — creating a coin where independent hubbing anomalies coincided. Class II doubling produces a characteristic spread where design elements appear shifted in a pivoting pattern rather than uniform directional displacement. The 1940-D Mercury Dime was struck in 90% silver at Denver during the final years of Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design, replaced by the Roosevelt Dime in 1946. A short SW/NE die scratch can be found above the R in TRUST. Several SSW/NNE die scratches can be found to the left of, and running above the designer’s initials. A SSW/NNE die crack can be found on the lower back of the cheek. Reverse: Two die scratches from the ribbon at the bottom of the fasces run SE and east meeting at the top left of the D in DIME. A die gouge protrudes from the top left of the F in OF. A die gouge protrudes from the leave under the top dot.
