1940-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

As the United States entered the defense buildup of 1940 — expanding military production while maintaining formal neutrality — Denver Mint cent production reflected the growing economy with a mintage of 81.39 million pieces, one of the largest Denver outputs of the era. WRPM-006 (Wexler Variety ID: 1940-D 1¢ WRPM-006) is the sixth documented repunched mintmark for this date, consistent with the extensive die consumption that such high production volumes required. Each working die needed its D mintmark applied individually by hand, and the volume of dies prepared for the 1940-D cent created more opportunities for placement corrections. Six RPMs from this substantial die pool demonstrates that mintmark application remained a manual craft subject to human variation even as industrial-scale production accelerated.
