1940-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-005

Description

The 1940-D Lincoln Wheat Cent WRPM-005 carries separate obverse and reverse die stage sequences tracking the secondary mintmark and die marker conditions independently — an unusually detailed documentation record. Wexler Variety ID: 1940-D 1¢ WRPM-005; cross-references CONECA RPM Number 5 and Coppercoins 1940D-1MM-005. Obverse Stage A shows the primary mintmark positioned lower than WRPM-006, with a strong secondary mintmark. Obverse Stage B shows the secondary reduced to a weak impression on the lower left only. Obverse Stage C shows the secondary worn to a weak and mushy remnant to the lower left. Reverse Stage A carries a die scratch northeast from the lower right of the P in PLURIBUS. Reverse Stage B shows no visible die scratch, documented from a circulated specimen. Reverse Stage C likewise shows no visible die marker from a circulated specimen. Struck in 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc bronze at the Denver Mint, the primary mintmark position lower than WRPM-006 is the key positional attribute distinguishing WRPM-005 within the 1940-D repunched mintmark sequence.
