1940-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-3414 and DMR-014, this 1940-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-006 documents a D/D South repunched mintmark — the second punch landed south of the initial impression, producing overlapping D images visible under magnification. Four die states trace the die's working life: Stage A presents both sides in early die state. Stage B advances to MDS with developing markers. Stage C shows progression into LDS with additional die cracks and deterioration. Stage D reaches very late die state, documenting the die near the end of its usable life. The D/D South direction is one of several repunch orientations cataloged for 1940-D Lincoln Cents, each reflecting the angle at which the hand-held mintmark punch was repositioned before the second blow. Denver struck 81,390,000 Lincoln Wheat Cents in 1940 — a substantial wartime-era output that required numerous die pairs. The hand-punching process, where each working die received its D mintmark individually, made slight misalignment inevitable across large production runs.
