1940-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Assigned UVC-080 and DMR-004, this 1940-D Lincoln Wheat Cent repunched mintmark variety is best attributed at Stage C, where the secondary mintmark impression has faded to a weak remnant — consistent with a late die state obverse — while the reverse is also characteristically late die state. The combination of a weakened secondary punch and late-stage die surfaces can make Stage C examples challenging to attribute without prior familiarity with the primary mintmark position and the direction of the secondary D. Earlier die stages, where the secondary impression is more prominent, offer cleaner attribution opportunities. Bronze Wheat Cents from the Denver Mint in 1940 were produced in substantial numbers across a large regular-strike mintage, and RPM-003 sits within a well-documented group of repunched mintmark varieties for the date, cataloged systematically in the VarietyVista reference alongside the other confirmed 1940-D RPM entries.
