1940-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Whaden Curtis as 1940-D WDDR-003, this Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on the reverse. Very close Class II doubling shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS, decreasing in strength from left to right across the legends. Extremely close doubling also appears on LIBERTY, though it is too minor to list as a primary diagnostic. Class II doubling results from distortion of the hub between impressions into the working die, creating a consistent directional spread. On the obverse, a series of die scratches above TRUST aids attribution. The reverse carries a series of die dots between the upper portions of the third and fourth columns of Monticello, two slanted die scratches to the left of the first A of AMERICA, and a slanted die scratch to the left of the small right semicircular arch. These multiple reverse die markers help distinguish WDDR-003 from other doubled die varieties on the 1940-D issue. Jefferson Nickels are struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, a composition used since the series began in 1938.
