1940-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

First cataloged DDR for the 1940 Denver Jefferson Nickel, this Class II Distorted Hub Doubling variety shows a close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, slightly increasing from left to right across the inscription. Class II doubling occurs when the working hub rotates during the sinking process, creating an arc-shaped displacement pattern that varies in magnitude depending on the distance from the rotational axis. Obverse die markers include a die gouge appearing as a dot in Jefferson's hair and die scratches across the top of his forehead. The reverse carries two die dots, one below and the other to the lower right of the small left window, plus a small die dot inside the lower loop of the first S of STATES. The 1940-D Jefferson Nickel had a mintage of approximately 43.5 million, a modest figure for the era. As the sole documented WDDR for this date and mint, it holds particular significance for Jefferson Nickel variety collectors building a comprehensive DDR set.
