1940-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-009
Error
Description
Ninth in the doubled die reverse catalog for 1940-D Jefferson Nickels, DDR-009 shows light spread on FIVE CENTS and the LLO of MONTICELLO — concentrating the hub displacement evidence on the denomination and the terminal letters of the building name. The light classification indicates the secondary impressions require careful magnification to distinguish from normal strike characteristics, but the two affected zones provide independent confirmation points. Three die stages are documented under catalog codes UVC-1613 and DMR-013. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state is also unconfirmed. Stage C confirms both the reverse and obverse in late die state, indicating most documented specimens derive from the die's final production window when accumulated wear and stress had advanced the die to its latest serviceable condition. That the only confirmed die stage is LDS suggests the variety may be more readily detectable on later strikes where die fatigue enhances the appearance of the doubling. The 1940-D Jefferson Nickel was struck during the second full year of the series at the Denver Mint. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-009 rewards patient examination of FIVE CENTS and the LLO ending of MONTICELLO under at least 7x magnification.
