Description
Under VarietyVista die markers UVC-656 and DMR-009, DDR-005 on the 1940-D Jefferson Nickel exhibits medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM accompanied by light spread on three additional reverse elements: the LLO of MONTICELLO, FIVE CENTS, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This dual-intensity pattern — medium on the motto, light on the denomination, building name, and national inscription — indicates the hub displacement vector aligned most favorably with the E PLURIBUS UNUM position on the die, where the angular or linear offset exceeded the visibility threshold for medium-grade detection, while the more peripheral inscription areas received displacement that, though detectable, fell into the lighter intensity range. The concentration of medium spread on the motto with diminishing intensity on surrounding elements is consistent with a hub displacement centered near the upper reverse where E PLURIBUS UNUM arcs across the design. Three die stages are documented: Stage A remains unconfirmed for Early Die State, Stage B confirms both reverse and obverse in Mid Die State, and Stage C is unconfirmed for Late Die State. The MDS confirmation for Stage B means documented specimens exist from the middle portion of this die's working life, but the earliest and latest production states have not yet been verified with physical examples. The 1940-D was struck at the Denver Mint in the standard 75% copper / 25% nickel Jefferson Nickel composition at 5 grams, predating the wartime silver alloy period by two years. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, with its columned portico and dome, positions the affected inscriptions in arcs above and below the architectural rendering, making the medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM the primary attribution target under 7x magnification.
