1940-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
As the primary doubled die reverse for the 1940-D Jefferson nickel, DDR-001 shows light spread and extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, OF AMERICA, CENTS, and the letters LLO of MONTICELLO. Struck at the Denver Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter, this is an early-series Jefferson nickel from only the third year of production following the design's debut in 1938. VarietyVista assigned this variety Universal Variety Code UVC-652 and Die Marker Reference DMR-005, documenting three die states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed); and Stage C at late die state where the reverse shows LDS characteristics and a die gouge appears over ER of LIBERTY. The light spread and extra thickness across multiple reverse legends is consistent with a close Class II distorted hub doubling where the displacement is uniform and subtle. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, depicting Thomas Jefferson's neoclassical Virginia home with its distinctive dome and columned portico, provides abundant fine architectural detail where even minor doubled die effects can be observed. The 1940-D nickel had a mintage of 43.5 million pieces, struck during the final pre-war years before the wartime silver alloy composition was introduced in 1942. This variety is part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series.
