1939-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

The first catalogued RPM for the 1939-S Jefferson Nickel, RPM-001 shows the S mintmark punched over a previous S to the West — an S/S West repunching attributed by VarietyVista. Die markers: UVC-001 and DMR-003. The reverse die is RDV-002, identifiable by its straight steps on the Monticello staircase — a feature that distinguishes this die from the 1938 reverse style. Stage A places both the reverse and obverse in early die state. The 1939 Jefferson Nickel carries the Reverse of 1940 design, an important transition issue that used a new reverse hub with straight steps rather than the raised steps of the original 1938 hub. The Reverse of 1940 pairing on RPM-001 adds historical context to the attribution: this is an S/S West mintmark repunching on the new-style reverse, struck only two years into the Jefferson series. The combination of RDV-002 straight steps and a documented West-direction RPM makes this piece of interest to both RPM specialists and Jefferson Nickel reverse die type collectors.
