Description
Second cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1938-D Mercury Dime, documenting a working die where the Denver Mint D punch was applied twice with a measurable shift between impressions. The 1938-D holds particular interest within the Mercury Dime series as a relatively low-mintage date from Denver, produced during a year when overall coin production remained modest compared to the high-volume years that bookend it. With only two cataloged RPMs, the 1938-D presents a notably smaller variety census than dates like 1936-D, suggesting either fewer working dies were consumed or fewer specimens have been examined with variety-hunting intensity. Wexler Variety ID: 1938-D 10¢ WRPM-002. The hand-punching process that created repunched mintmarks continued throughout the Mercury Dime's production life, ending only when the series was replaced by John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime in 1946. Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty obverse pairs with the fasces reverse on which the D mintmark sits to the left of the central bundle. Denver Mint, 90% silver at 2.50 grams. The limited RPM catalog depth for 1938-D makes each documented entry proportionally more significant to date-specific collectors.
